Did you know?
by Alan Rutland
Welcome, my name is Alan Rutland I am not a Doctor nor can I give any medical advice. I am a researcher who has made a life long study of how the body works and I have written a number of books about natural health. My wife and I have raised 10 children and their ages are from 18yrs to 44yrs. We are both in our middle 60's and still lead an active busy life. We have realized the secret of anti-aging is by maintaining good health.
I am manager of a training company, DDT Training Pty Ltd and teach construction site (Blue Card) Fatigue Management and a trainer and assessor for (MC) B-Double and Road Train. I am accredited with the Qld Department of Transport to teach Fatigue Management and they have asked me to explain the importance of nutrition to combat fatigue.
I do not understand how most people will go out dinner and spend over $100 on a meal, own flash houses drive expensive cars, buy cigarettes and beer and accumulate and adorn their homes with ornaments and, will not spend a cent on maintaining good health. Some of our friends have worked hard all their lives putting together assets, only to be struck down with life destroying illness's as soon as their goal is achieved. Why do people continue to rely on Doctors who only ever prescribe drugs that mask the symptoms of disease and never talk about the actual cause of the problem? Most people believe that if they eat an average diet, they will be healthy. While for some this is true, it is not universally so, especially for those people who are already unwell. Surveys about diet show that the intake of essential nutrients is very low
in some groups of people. The elderly are particularly at risk because of falling food intake and poor absorption - they easily develop nutritional deficiencies. The young continually resist eating anything labeled as healthy (it's not cool). What we all eat is decided upon by personal preference, by the availability in shops, canteens, and cafe's, we seem to eat what other people tell us to eat, we are influenced by restaurants, advertising in magazines and our friends and neighbors.
Some interesting statistics were in the Sunday paper a while ago, would you believe that in Queensland in 1997/98 $44,068,254 was spent on heart disease prescription medicine and $32,084,968 on drugs for high cholesterol, when you think how many people there are in Qld makes you wonder why the population doesn't claim back the responsibility for their own health, give Doctors a rev about treating the symptom and not advising patients about the cause of these complaints. Because most are avoided by natural nutritional supplements and a better diet, Most of these people have little or no knowledge of what makes up a healthy diet. The mere presence of symptoms or of an illness is a sign that there is some sort of disturbance in metabolism. These signs are NOT natural, the individual with heart disease may have high cholesterol: someone with migraine, abnormalities of blood stickiness; and a child with eczema, food, or other allergies. Increasingly, the specific bio-chemical abnormalities or nutritional deficiencies that can occur in certain disease states are becoming understood. This opens the door to powerful and sometimes curative treatment by simply using nutritional supplements and a changed diet.
Pick almost anyone in Australia or New Zealand over the age of 50 and they can tell you the major causes of heart disease is obesity, a high fat diet, not enough exercise, stress, high cholesterol and high blood pressure right? Well not quite. High blood pressure and high cholesterol don't directly cause heart disease; they are more like indicators that heart disease does exist. They are symptoms of heart disease. Knowing that you have these so-called risk factors is useful only if you track down they're underlying causes and treat them. Drugs that lower cholesterol and blood pressure may reduce your risk of heart disease, but they tend simultaneously to raise your risk of other diseases because they don't treat the underlying problem. If you try to force a symptom away with a powerful drug, the underlying problem is just going to pop up somewhere else until you treat the cause. We know that other factors such as your homocysteine levels and your antioxidant levels are just as important if not more so than cholesterol and blood pressure. Simple cures seem to be the hardest thing to do for many people, because they involve a change in lifestyle and daily habits. The only way to cure heart disease is to work on its causes. If you take the initiative to make positive changes in your diet, get some exercise, lose some weight and take supplements, you will begin to see some improvements in your health very rapidly. (From Earl M Lindell's book Prescription Alternatives.
Mum always said, "eat your fruits and vegetables, they'll help you grow big and strong." Although dietary recommendations have changed over the years, this is one bit of advice even Father Time can't ignore. According to recent studies, antioxidants and vitamins in produce and other foods may actually represent a modern-day "Fountain of Youth." Evidence suggests that vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, may reduce the risk of some forms of cancer, heart disease, strokes, cataracts, as well as slow the aging process. How do these compounds work and how far are scientists willing to go in touting their health benefits?
Antioxidants at Work
Although oxygen is vital to life, scientists are also finding this essential element may contribute to human aging and illness. When oxygen is metabolized or burned by the body, cells form byproducts
called "free radicals." Free radicals travel through the cell, disrupting the structure of other molecules and resulting in cellular damage. Such damage is believed to contribute to aging and various health problems. Antioxidants protect key cell components from damage by neutralizing the free radicals. Antioxidants that occur naturally in the body or are consumed through the diet may block most of the damage. However, over time damaged cells can accumulate and lead to age-related diseases, researchers say. "Antioxidant defense systems limit [free-radical] formation and scavenge them, but antioxidant defenses are not 100 percent efficient," said Barry Halliwell, D.Sc., of the University of London and the University of California at Davis. At a symposium sponsored by the International Life
Sciences Institute (ILSI), Halliwell noted that over time, "Oxidative stress can damage proteins, lipids, DNA and carbohydrates." Free radicals are incredibly destructive. They damage our cells, which can mean premature aging, reduced immune function, inflammation and ultimately degenerative disease. Our primary defense is antioxidant nutrients, of which the most well known are vitamins C and E. The biological activity of antioxidants is enormously important to our health. OPC's, or proanthocyandins are the most powerful antioxidant free radical scavengers known to man. They are as much as 50 times more potent than vitamin E and 20 times more than vitamin C. In an effort to combat free-radical activity, scientists are studying the effects of increasing individuals' antioxidant levels through the diet and dietary supplements.
Recent Research
Among the most widely publicised research trials on antioxidants was a five-year study released earlier this year in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Almost 30,000 residents of north central China were given either a placebo or a dietary supplement containing one of seven vitamin-mineral combinations. Persons who received a daily dose of beta-carotene, vitamin E and selenium had a reduced cancer rate of 13 percent. Nutrient doses ranged from one to two times the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance. Although many questions remain as to the significance of these findings for other populations, the study represents the first large-scale prospective, placebo-controlled study showing the benefits of dietary supplementation with antioxidants. Much of the previous evidence was based on
epidemiological studies of populations, which suggest an association between antioxidants and disease prevention but are not designed to reveal cause and affect relationships.
In another recent study reported at the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Session in November, women who consumed high amounts of antioxidant-containing foods such as carrots and spinach had a 33 percent lower risk of heart attack and a 71 percent lower risk of stroke, than women
who ate few antioxidant-containing foods. The study involved 1,795 female nurses, each of whom had a history of heart attack, chest pain due to coronary disease, or treatment for a blockage in a coronary artery. Food intake was analyzed according to subjects' estimated consumption of vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and riboflavin. Even after controlling for other variables that can contribute to
cardiovascular risk such as high blood pressure, the nurses who consumed the most dietary antioxidants had the greatest disease reduction."These data suggest that people at high risk because of a history of
cardiovascular disease or events may benefit the most from increased consumption of fruits and vegetables," said JoAnn Manson, M.D., of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
Just what are "Free Radicals"?
The term "free radical" seems to appear a lot lately in everything from vitamins brochures to cosmetic advertisements. No one seems to explain what exactly one is. Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable molecules that can cause serious cellular damage. These molecules contain atoms with
unpaired electrons. An unpaired electron has a tremendous pull on the atoms of other cells causing these cells to become disrupted; this can cause a chain reaction resulting in many aging problems. This aging is like oxidation of the body similar to metal rust. The same oxygen that causes metal to rust causes free radicals in our bodies, which causes it to age or"rust". Free radicals are produced not only through normal bodily processes, but also from other sources such as air pollution and tobacco smoke. All of the cells in our body are continually exposed to these damaging molecules, which many scientists now believe may contribute to the development of a host of chronic diseases, including cancer, premature aging, cataracts, heart disease, senility and arthritis. Along with reducing fat and salt
intake, not smoking, and regular exercise, eating foods rich in antioxidants (fruits, vegetables, nuts, and leafy greens) should help reduce the damage caused by these free radicals. For those who don't eat a well-balanced diet, taking supplements is highly recommended. Smokers especially, should consider taking antioxidants daily.
Some of the More than Sixty Disorders in Which Oxygen-Free Radicals Are Implicated
Alzheimer's, Arthritis, Hemorrhoids, Parkinson's, Rheumatism, Heart Attack, Aids, Cataracts, Stroke, Cancer, Stress/Jet Lag, Senility, Varicose Veins, Phlebitis, Swollen Extremities"Free oxygen radicals, the main type formed in living organisms, have been implicated in recent studies in more than 60 disorders, including heart disease, cataracts and rheumatoid arthritis. And according to one of the leading theories on aging, they contribute to the process of becoming old such as wrinkling of the skin, decline of kidney functions and increased susceptibility to autoimmune diseases." Jane E. Brody - New York Times - April 26, 1988
"Oxygen in its deadly form" says University of South Alabama biochemist Joe McCord, "may, in fact, be the underlying mechanism for most disease..." Joe McCord - Reprinted from Press Gazette - May 1986, Ellen Hale
"...Cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cataracts and a host of other disorders, it's thought that the formation of free radicals, poisonous compounds of oxygen that exist for only a fraction of a second, trigger a series of rapid cell-killing chemical reactions overpowering the body's defenses against them, and can be produced by sunlight, radiation, air pollution..."
The Wall Street Journal - Technology and Science - January 17, 1989 "Very few individuals, if any, reach their potential maximum life span; they die instead prematurely of a wide variety of diseases - the vast majority being of 'free radical' diseases."
Dr. Denham Harman - MD, Ph.D., 1984

10 Common Misconceptions about Aging
I'm too old to start worrying about my health.
Many of the greatest individual proponents and success stories in anti-aging medicine did not start a longevity program until well into there 50's, 60's and even 70's. Research has proved that many ailments attributed to aging are preventable and, in some instances, even reversible. So it is
never too late to start! Many patients have experienced the arrest, and often reversal, of conditions commonly associated with aging once they started anti-aging program.
Supplements won't REALLY work.
While results will vary in intensity depending on an individual's health and immune system status, overall patients report increased feeling of well being, increased resistance to colds and minor infections and improved energy levels.
I have bad genes so nothing will help me.
Research does suggest a hereditary factor in many diseases prevalent in our society today. However, recognizing your risk factors and taking action against them may prevent you repeating family history. For example, if heart disease is prevalent in your family, sticking to a low-fat diet, taking a brisk walk daily, and supplementing your diet with a high potency Multi-vitamin and Antioxidant formula may keep you from following in your family's footsteps!
It's too late for me. I really abused my body with alcohol, drugs and cigarettes.
It is never too late to take responsibility for your health and start an anti-aging program. Research has shown that specific nutrients and antioxidants can prevent further cellular damage and may even help restore some functions.
Disease is an inevitable part of getting older
Increasingly modern research is demonstrating that this is possible as many of the degenerative conditions we once regarded as an inevitable part of aging are in fact been shown to be preventable and, in some instances, even reversible! People can stay active and healthy into there 70's, 80's
and beyond.
You don't need supplements when you're young.
If it's never too late, it can never be too soon to start an anti-aging program. Research shows that today's busy lifestyles and eating habits result in "marginal" nutrient deficiencies with people not meeting even RDA levels of all essential nutrients. Other factors, such as smoking, alcohol, chronic dieting, and prescription drugs can further increase our individual nutrient requirements. Even a "good" diet may not provide enough micronutrients to promote optimal health and longevity. Marginal nutritional deficiencies are difficult to diagnose and result in a variety of vague symptoms along with a general decrease in wellness. Unaddressed, these deficiencies can put you at risk for future health problems. A scientifically balanced, high potency Multi-Vitamin & Antioxidant offers cost-effective health "insurance" at any age. Someone asked me the other day how we get Arthritis; arthritis is inflammation of a joint. Rheumatoid arthritis is usually indicated by the inflammation of numerous joints and their fluid-producing membranes and by atrophy, or wasting of the muscles and bone that surround a joint. Well it's like this- if we are suffering free-radical damage; the cells are being mutated and because of these cell degeneration bacteria are breeding. The mass cells then release histamine, which causes inflammation. Our white blood cells are working overtime trying to keep up with the inflammation
that is taking place in the joints, they get to work killing bacteria by releasing hydrogen peroxide, (or bleach) the destruction of the joint comes about by too much hydrogen peroxide being released. The bleach eats into the joint; in this situation our body is actually destroying itself.
Antioxidents stimulate the production of Nitric Oxide and superoxide dismutase; these natural free radical fighters take over the job of killing the bacteria and the white blood cells then do not have to counter by releasing so much bleach. The antioxident action stimulates the production of Nitric Oxide in our bodies. Nitric Oxide dilates the blood vessels giving better blood flow it spews out ahead of the white blood cells killing viruses, bacteria and cancer cells. Scientists have discovered that an otherwise nuisance gas NITRIC OXIDE, which has helped, creates the drug VIAGRA. They found that heart and blood pressure drugs such as nitroglycerine caused the release of nitric oxide in the body, which in turn
caused blood vessels to relax and dilate. Viagra counters impotence by dilating the blood vessels in the penis. Now they have discovered that it can now be used to relieve Asthma, halt Arthritis and fight Cancer.
I take supplements because I believe that we are malnourished, and there is plenty of evidence in favor of improved nutrition and reduced disease. One free radical can damage a million or more molecules. Its a chain reaction like dominoes... with unlimited energy to seek and destroy, causing massive damage if uncontrolled. This damage is called oxidative stress. Oxidation is literally decay. Oxidation in our environment is seen as rusting of metal, rotting of meat, browning of apples, and the brittle changes in old rubber. Oxidation in our bodies, like rust or rot, is thought to be responsible for premature aging, wrinkling of skin, hardening of the arteries, stiffening of joints, formation of cataracts, and development of cancer.
Because of overexposure to free radicals, our bodies need outside help. Because our diets are inadequate, we need to take antioxidant supplements. Premature decay leads to premature aging, degenerative diseases and life threatening illnesses. Let me tell you about a few things that happen to us when we suffer from free radical damage. Our liver becomes stressed. The liver actually produces free radicals; we need some free radicals, it's when they get to large in numbers that they start becoming a problem. When we are suffering toxicity the liver produces cholesterol to protect us from these toxins, the toxins are absorbed by the cholesterol. Also the pancreas gets tired from constantly producing bi-carbonate of soda to keep our pH balance. If we eat food that's in the acid range bi-carb neutralises it. When it's overworked like this it's no wonder that it stops producing insulin. (Diabetics take note) Gallstones are formed from eating fatty foods. The liver produces bile - it increases production when we have to process fats - The bile crystallises when it comes into contact with the fat, the crystals them turn into gallstones. The liver processing dead red blood cells can also cause gallstones. The pigmentation also crystallises to form stones. Kidney stones are formed from an overabundance of chemicals in our blood, also sometimes when the kidney is stressed, pieces of dead kidney tissue flake off and lodge in the entrance to the urinary passage, it then crystallises to form a kidney stone. It is very painful. If you have ever suffered with asthma you may or may not realise what's happening to your body, you cannot breathe. Death can occur from asphyxiation. Our immune system is composed of white blood cells; this defense system is normally so powerful that most invaders don't stand a chance. Sometimes however it runs out of control. There are two kinds of white blood cells, we will call them T1 and T2, and they are both engineered to police virus's bacteria and tumors. It has been suggested that T2 cells were originally designed to deal with parasites
but somewhere along the line they adapted to "protect" us from harmless things like mould, pollen, animal dander, dust mites or perfume. Most of us breathe this microscopic airborne debris without a problem. Others don't, and sometimes these T2 cells in people that are sensitive to allergens, wage
an all out war against these innocent substances, unleashing an allergic reaction. Agitated to a state of high alert, T2 cells spot a target and start sending out chemical signals that marshal forces to the site of the attack. The battlefield is often our body's most delicate tissue.... The lungs.
Although a lot of asthmatics take prescription medications they only contain not cure the allergic reaction and whether we like it or not we are constantly exposed to allergens. The T2 cells are there, monitoring the lung surface waiting to respond to the barrage of alien particles. When activated they pump out chemical messengers, some of the body's most intriguing devices: mast cells and eosinophils. These potent little time bombs house a staggering array of chemical weapons. Trip them and you are in
mortal danger. When these cells become stimulated, they explode, releasing into the tissue their mediators of inflammation. Chief among them are the histamines and leukotrienes. These provoke blood vessels to leak plasma, causing lung tissue to swell. (We cannot get enough air in and feel as if we are drowning) They also spur muscles of the airways to constrict. As the lungs shut down, not only is oxygen unable to reach the blood through the lungs but the waste product of our metabolism - carbon dioxide, which quickly builds to toxic levels, also cannot find its way out. When mast cells release their cargo in high concentration, asthmatics can die. Antioxidants in most cases relieve the symptoms of asthma, but remember to cut out any mucus producing food like dairy products etc.
Aches and pains?
Have you ever wondered why your legs ache sometimes when you only have a mild infection?
To eliminate unwelcome bacteria and debris from the body, the immune system activates white blood cells to hunt down and consume these foreign materials. When activated, these normal more or less sperical cells grow "legs" or pseudopods, to help them move around. However, when these 8-micrometer cells enter the networks of capillaries that permeate the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients, the legs can cause the white blood cells to stick to the vessel walls and block the flow of blood. The body's defenders then become damaging hazards in circulatory problems including stroke, ishemia, diabetes, and high blood pressure. If you have an infection and you take two enzyme capsules every hour until you experience relief, the white blood cell count jumps a staggering 1400% so as well as giving us live enzymes for food digestion and energy it is a bacteria fighter as well.
There is an Alkaloid that is essential to proper cell function and sustained health called Xeronine. It is produced in the small intestine from key building blocks that must be present in the correct amounts. Those building blocks are Proxeronine- the precursor to Xeronine and proxeronase, the enzyme catalyst required for chemical reaction. ............. Confused? It doesn't matter so long as you understand that without this alkaloid you would die. What it does is activate dormant enzymes that are found in our small intestines. This is very important, since we eat too many foods that are lacking in enough enzymes. Our bodies need specific enzymes to enjoy efficient digestion, calm nerves and to increase our physical and emotional energy.
Xeronine protects and keeps the shape and suppleness of protein molecules so that they are able to pass through the cell walls and be used to form healthy tissue. Without these nutrients going into the cell, the cell cannot perform its job efficiently. Without pro-xeronine to produce Xeronine our cells suffer because. --- It assists in enlarging the membrane pores of the cell. And allowing better absorption of nutrients.
This allows for a larger chain of peptide (amino acids or proteins) to be admitted into the cell and us to feel better. If these chains are not used, this precious source of energy is lost by going to fat or being eliminated. Every cell in the body is like a house with doors and windows. When you drive a car into a garage you need to open the large door. The same goes on in our body, if we absorb a larger protein molecule, we need to open a larger pore if we are to use it. If Xeronine is not being produced by our intestines we can supplement it by taking a Noni juice product.
A benefit of Noni is that we become less hungry, because of this our bodies are not being forced to build up a thick layer of fat from overeating. We can also credit Noni for the increased energy since we become better fed. Because of this new energy and for some even euphoria, this excitement, joy and positively give life a totally new meaning. The reason that Noni makes a person feel well is caused by Xeronine converting brain receptor proteins into active sites for the absorption of endorphin, the well being hormones. Other proteins form pores through membranes in the intestines, the blood vessels and body organs.
We are hearing a lot of good reports on NONI it appears that in some cases Noni fights a one-man battle against everything. Now me, being the master cynic, I need a clinical reason for how everything works. I have told you all before that Noni stimulates the production of Xeronine, which is produced in the small intestine, and this in turn helps with the secretion of endorphines in the brain. The xeronine goes to work on the cells increasing the size of the pores in the cell membrane this allows for larger nutrients to be absorbed into the cell and allows more oxygen in. What it has done for me is that I am experiencing much greater clarity of thought I have been able to work longer hours without stress and my sleep pattern has improved. I can't explain more than that except that I am not going to stop taking it. You owe it to yourself to try Noni, what have you got to lose. Are there any transport drivers amongst your family and friends? Truck driving is very stressful and very tiring, some days for no reason, even after a good nights sleep it is just impossible to stay awake the problem is made worse by some Prime Contractor company's demanding that you keep to a strict schedule. Years ago before they were completely outlawed drivers took Methedrine, Benzedrine, Liquid methedrine, Purple Hearts and then later Duramine and Ephedrine or shakers, although these substances were illegal a lot of families owe the lives of their dads to them, for the plain truth is that they kept them alive, believe me it was better to take drugs than to go to sleep at the wheel. The reason that we feel so lethargic at times is because we do not give our bodies the right fuel to burn. Live food (like raw fruit and veggies) is energy. Dead (or cooked food) gives absolutely zero energy, none, zilch, Most drivers do not have the opportunity to eat raw food.
A few things you should know about Cells, Enzymes and the Colon.
Cells. We have trillions of cells that make up our body tissue bones blood and organs. Each and every cell is a miniature sewerage treatment works, its job is to take in nutrients that the blood supplies and expel toxins. If these cells do not receive the correct nutrients they die off or begin to "clump" (which is the onset of cancer). Our cells only live for 90 days and before dying, if not already mutated, produce two new daughter cells these live for 90 days and so on.
Enzymes. We are all born with an infinite number of enzymes and every part of our body needs these enzymes to survive. Most people tend to think that our food is broken down and processed by some sort of strong hydrochloric acid in our stomachs. This is not true. Our food is broken down by enzymes, not our enzymes, but the enzymes in the food we eat, so long of course that the food we eat is not cooked, because cooking food destroys these enzymes. To get live enzymes we must eat uncooked food. Our bodies can not process cooked food that has no enzyme activity so it tends to "borrow" enzymes from random parts of the body such as the skin, bones or internal organs, thus causing distress in these areas and ultimately sickness. The processed food from the stomach then continues through the system to our colons.
Colon. The colon is approximately 1.2 m2 long and up to 100mm wide. It is permeable meaning that the wet processed food is sucked through the walls to be picked up by the blood stream and transported first through the liver where toxins and heavy metals are filtered out, to the lungs for reoxygenation, then on to the heart to be pumped back through the body. A normal day for the typical heavy vehicle operator begins without breakfast, (not hungry) by 8.30am he stops for a pie and a coke, 10am he needs to move his bowels but guess what, truck stopping areas do not have toilets so he has to either squat beside truck or wait, which he normally does, to get to the next truck stop. Unfortunately it is 250klms further up the road. In the meantime the colon keeps sucking out the liquid through the colon wall until either the residue becomes hardened (constipation) or the colon wall weakens and pushes out a pocket like a hernia. Unprocessed faeces are trapped in this space. This continues to happen over the years until these pockets or polyps increase in size and number until the belly protrudes over the waistline and drops, (sound familiar). This is not the worst news because while this is happening the build up of hard matter inside the colon seals the liquid inside the middle of the organ, so the nutrients cannot get to our bloodstream. We are then receiving no nutrients at all and begin suffering from malnutrition and sickness. These polyps are also the perfect breeding ground for all types of intestinal worms. The worms eat our food then defecate. This worm poo is poisonous and when our body starts to spread this around the bloodstream we are in real trouble. It causes chronic fatigue syndrome, bad breath and other sicknesses. Another side effect of enlarged colon is damage to the prostate, as the colon grows in size the belly drops down and puts pressure on the prostate. One fine morning after urinating shaking and returning back into pants you suddenly find that you have a wet leg. Your penis has dribbled because the prostate is now squeezing the urethra tube and restricting flow. Your Dr will order a PSA blood test to ascertain if there is any cancer enzyme activity, which if positive could lead to surgery.
Every type of sickness is caused by what we put in our mouths. Here is a tip, give up dairy food, bread and try to avoid cooked food. Lunch could consist of raw vegetables or fruit, nuts, fish like smoked Salmon or Tuna. Drink only water not soft drink, avoid coffee. You will find that you are more alert and able to work longer. You will also live longer.
